Answer Engine
Optimisation in Adelaide.

Be the answer, not the tenth blue link. Search is collapsing into single, spoken and summarised answers — and this page is about the technical work that makes your Adelaide business the one that gets read out.

FAQ schema · Entity SEO · Question-led content · No lock-in
The shift

Ten blue links became one answer.

For twenty years, search handed people a list and let them choose. Now it increasingly hands them an answer — a snippet at the top of Google, a sentence read aloud by a voice assistant, a summary written by AI. The list is shrinking to a single response, and only one business gets to be inside it.

If that answer isn't yours, the click never happens. You can rank on page one and still lose the customer to a competitor whose content was structured to be lifted and quoted. Answer engine optimisation is the work of making sure the answer is yours — and it's less about writing more and more about being unmistakably readable to a machine.

Definitions

What AEO actually is.

Answer engine optimisation is optimising to be the direct answer. That means winning the formats where search gives one response instead of ten: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice results, and the answer panels that increasingly sit above the old list of links. You get there through structure — clear question-and-answer content and the markup that tells a machine exactly what it's reading.

It's a close sibling of GEO, but not the same thing. Where AEO is about being the answer, generative engine optimisation in Adelaide is about being the cited source inside AI-generated text like ChatGPT. AEO makes you machine-readable; GEO makes you machine-recommended. They share foundations and work best together, which is why they both sit under our AI search optimisation agency services — but the levers are different, and this page is the deep dive on the readable half.

The money section

FAQ schema, explained properly.

FAQ schema is a small block of structured data that labels a question and its answer so a machine knows precisely what each part is. Instead of hoping Google works out that a heading is a question and the paragraph below it is the answer, you tell it outright, in a format built for machines. Here's what it looks like — this is a real, valid example:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "How much does a plumber cost in Adelaide?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Most Adelaide plumbers charge $90–$150 an hour,
               plus a call-out fee. Emergency and after-hours
               work costs more. Ask for a fixed quote up front."
    }
  }]
}
</script>

What it does. It makes your questions and answers machine-extractable. Search engines, voice assistants and AI tools can pull the answer straight out, word for word, without guessing.

How to implement it. The markup goes in the page's code (not visible to readers), and every question and answer in it must also appear, visibly, on the page. That last rule matters: marking up an answer that isn't on the page is against the guidelines and can get you penalised.

The common mistakes. Marking up content that isn't visible; stuffing in questions nobody asks to game it; writing answers that meander for three sentences before getting to the point. Answer-first phrasing is the whole game — the extractable answer belongs in the first sentence, with the detail after.

The bit most people get wrong. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results (those expandable questions under a result) for most sites back in 2023. A lot of businesses concluded FAQ schema was dead and ripped it out. That was a mistake: the visual feature went away, but the markup still tells AI tools and voice assistants exactly what your answers are, and those are the surfaces winning attention now. The rich result was never the point — being machine-readable is.

Identity

Entity SEO and entity optimisation.

Search engines don't just index pages — they build a map of things: businesses, people, places, products, and how they relate. Entity SEO is the work of making your business a clear, single node on that map instead of a fuzzy cloud of half-matching mentions. Entity optimisation is the same idea applied deliberately: giving a machine every reason to be certain who you are.

In practice it comes down to a few technical moves. Consistent NAP — your name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear, because a mismatch makes a machine unsure it's the same business. sameAs links — pointing your Organization markup at your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook and other profiles, so all those identities are stitched to one entity. @id linking — giving your business a single canonical identifier and referencing it across your pages, so your homepage, service pages and articles all say “this is the same organisation.”

Done well, this feeds the knowledge graph — the store of entities Google and, increasingly, AI models draw on to decide what's true about a business. A clear entity is easier to trust, easier to describe accurately, and far more likely to be the one a machine names. A business needs one canonical identity across the web for the same reason a person needs one consistent legal name: ambiguity is friction, and machines route around friction.

The core set

The structured data your Adelaide business needs.

You don't need every schema type that exists — just the handful that describe a local service business clearly. This is the core set we implement.

Schema typeWhat it doesWhy it matters
LocalBusinessDeclares you're a real business with a location, hours and contact details.The backbone of local answers and map results.
OrganizationDefines your brand as an entity, with logo and sameAs links.Anchors your identity in the knowledge graph.
ServiceDescribes what you offer and the area you serve.Helps you surface for “who does X in Adelaide” questions.
FAQPageMarks up your questions and answers as machine-readable pairs.Lets AI and voice lift your answers directly.
BreadcrumbListMaps your site structure and each page's place in it.Gives engines context and can enrich your results.
ReviewSurfaces genuine ratings and testimonials.A strong trust signal when a machine chooses who to name.
The writing side

Writing content that gets extracted.

Markup tells a machine where the answer is; the writing decides whether it's worth lifting. The starting point is finding the real questions — the exact phrasing your customers use, not the tidy version you'd write in a brochure. People Also Ask boxes, the questions that come up on sales calls, and the searches that already bring you traffic all tell you what to answer.

Then structure each answer to be extracted. Lead with the answer in the first sentence — a clear, self-contained response of roughly 40 to 90 words — then add the detail underneath for the reader who wants more. Bury that answer in the third paragraph and you hand the snippet to whoever put theirs up top. Machines reward the piece that respects their impatience: question, answer, done, then depth. Write for the extract first, the scroll second.

A fair question

Does AEO help with voice search?

Yes — and it's the same mechanism, not a separate project. When someone asks Siri or Google Assistant “who's the best physio near me in Adelaide?”, the device reads out a single answer, usually pulled from a featured snippet or structured data. There's no page of ten results to scroll — there's one spoken response. The answer-first content and clean markup that win you snippets are exactly what get your business spoken aloud. Optimise to be the answer on screen, and you're optimising to be the answer out loud at the same time.

The bigger picture

Where AEO fits alongside SEO and GEO.

Think of it as three layers on one foundation. SEO earns you the ranking. AEO turns that ranking into the direct answer — the snippet, the voice result, the extracted line. GEO gets you cited inside AI-generated recommendations. Same clean content and structured data underneath; three different payoffs on top.

You don't have to choose. For a plain-English breakdown of how SEO, AEO and GEO differ and fit together — including the side-by-side comparison — see our AI search optimisation agency services. This page is the deep dive on the AEO layer: making your business the answer a machine can read straight off the page.

Questions

AEO questions, answered straight.

Answer-first, naturally — this section is marked up with the FAQ schema it describes.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of structuring your content and data so search engines and AI can lift your business straight into a direct answer — a featured snippet, a voice result, a People Also Ask box or an AI summary. Rather than just ranking a page, the goal is to be the answer itself, phrased and marked up so a machine can extract it cleanly.

FAQ schema is structured data that labels a question and its answer so machines know exactly what they are. Most Adelaide service businesses benefit from it: even though Google now hides FAQ rich results for many sites, the markup still helps AI tools and voice assistants extract your answers accurately. This very page uses it — you're looking at an example of AEO in action.

Entity SEO is making your business a single, clearly-defined thing that search engines and AI recognise — one canonical identity rather than a scatter of inconsistent mentions. It covers consistent name, address and phone details, sameAs links to your profiles, and @id links that tie your pages together. The clearer your entity, the more confidently a machine can name you.

Yes — it's the same mechanism. Voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant read out a single answer, usually pulled from a featured snippet or structured data. The answer-first content and clean markup that win you snippets are exactly what get your business spoken aloud, so optimising for answer engines optimises for voice at the same time.

No, though they're close cousins. AEO is about being the direct answer — snippets, voice, People Also Ask — through structure and markup. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is about being the business cited inside AI-generated text like ChatGPT. AEO makes you machine-readable; GEO makes you machine-recommended. Most businesses want both, and they build on the same foundations.

For most local service businesses, the core set is LocalBusiness, Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Review. Together they tell engines who you are, what you offer, where you operate, what people ask you, and how you're rated. You don't need every schema type that exists — just the handful that describe your business clearly and accurately.

Our pricing is published and month to month, with no lock-in — plans start at $590/mo.
